Pick your date: the sunset, the golden hour, the blue hour and your hour at Bryce Canyon, in local time.
Times are Bryce Canyon local time (America/Denver), worked out from the sun’s position for this place (the NOAA method), good to about a minute on a flat horizon. Golden hour is the last hour before sunset; blue hour runs from sunset to the end of civil twilight.

High in the ponderosas, the dark gets so complete that the sky stops being a ceiling and starts feeling like a place you could fall into.
In the reel: A couple on a blanket pointing up at the Milky Way, pine silhouettes, a thousand stars.
Pine forest plus a Milky Way this bright means a certified dark-sky park at altitude. Bryce Canyon (International Dark Sky Park, ponderosa pines, 2,400 m) matches the frame exactly, and a safari-tent camp 15 minutes from the gate puts the blanket scene on your own deck, so the sky in the drawing is the actual bed.
Late May to early October for the Milky Way core; the park's Astronomy Festival ran 11–13 June in 2026. Ranger-led stargazing runs summer evenings, about 100 programmes a year.
The hour: Pick the 5 nights around the new moon. Full dark comes at 21:25 in mid-June and 20:30 in mid-September (end of civil dusk; our own calculation); the Milky Way core stands in the south-east by 22:00 in June and 21:00 in September.
Avoid: Full-moon weeks (sky washed out); mid-July monsoon afternoons can bring cloud.
The 15th of each month, local time.
