Positano at blue hour: the town tumbling down to its tiled dome, and the moon laying silver on the sea below the road.
Our hour there
We took the long way on purpose. All day on a rented Vespa, east along the Amalfi Drive toward Praiano, slowly, my arms around you, every bend another blue. I kept waiting for the sun to drop into the sea, and it never did. It slid behind the mountains while I was still looking the wrong way, and you laughed so hard your helmet knocked mine. By the time we rolled down Viale Pasitea, the light had gone soft and blue. Bougainvillea hung over the road, the dome of Santa Maria Assunta glowed low below us, and the moon was laying a path on the water. Salt on my lips, the engine barely a hum. I didn't want the road to end.
At blue hour, you two get the town in its quietest colour. The houses stack down to the tiled dome, the sea turns from steel to ink, and the stairs go warm with lamplight. On a full-moon weekend the moon comes up over the water and draws that long glitter path, though you'll want to check the moonrise for your own night. Stand on the high road on Via Cristoforo Colombo first and just look. Then let the downhill leg carry you into town, slowly, together.
One honest thing: the road through town is a one-way loop, and which way it runs is something to check on the ground before you plan the ride. And never stop in the lane to film. Pull over properly, or keep riding and let the moment be yours.
♡ We named every hairpin after something we'd bickered about at breakfast, and somewhere before Praiano we ran out of arguments and started naming them after each other.
The frame, in real life
In the reel: A couple seen from behind rides a Vespa down a winding coastal road past bougainvillea-draped houses, with Positano's tiled dome and the moonlit sea in view, at night.
The view is real. It comes from Positano's one road loop: the postcard look down to the dome of Santa Maria Assunta is on Via Cristoforo Colombo near the Sponda bus stop, and the other leg, Viale Pasitea, has its own view of the town. The loop is one-way, but which way is unverified, so check before you film the riding clip. The sun sets behind the mountains here, so the night version in the drawing is the honest one.
When to go
May to September. Full-moon weekends in 2027: 21–23 May, 18–20 June (the best pick) and 17–19 September. Several hotels close in winter, and their 2027 dates are unverified.
The hour: Blue hour. In late June the sun sets about 20:30–20:38 and blue hour runs about 20:58–21:11. Moonrise times are unverified, so check PhotoPills for your date.
Avoid: Waiting for a sunset over the sea, which doesn't happen here. Stopping in the lane to film. Riding in from Sorrento without checking Meta's scooter ordinance.
