Beauty looks different with you
The frame, in real life
In the reel: A couple, arm around waist, standing in a warm gallery in front of Van Gogh's The Starry Night.
The Starry Night hangs at the Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd Street, on the 5th floor (the 1880s–1940s galleries). The painting is small (73 × 92 cm) and usually has a crowd, so the empty-gallery frame in the reel is a timing problem, not a luck problem.
When to go
Any; January–February and September are quietest.
The hour: Be at the door before the 10:30 opening and go straight to 5th floor. You get 10–15 minutes of near-empty gallery. Alternative: the last hour before close on a weekday.
Avoid: Weekend afternoons and free evenings for the empty frame (go then only for the vibe).
What it costs (USD)
Shoestring: Adult ticket ~$30 (free for under 16; check moma.org for free-admission evenings and residents' programs)
Mid: 250–400 per night in Midtown
Splurge: The Whitby or The Chatwal, both minutes from the door
